Plantronics Unveils Advanced
Technology Concepts on Wall Street
Company to Ring New York Stock Exchange Opening Bell and Show
Advanced Wireless Headset Concepts
SANTA CRUZ, CA. - June 20, 2003 – Plantronics, Inc.
(NYSE-Listed PLT), will ring the opening bell at the New York
Stock Exchange today as the company celebrates its new wireless
communications products and demonstrates new technologies.
While in New York, Plantronics will offer a glimpse into the
future of wireless voice communications by demonstrating two
advanced technology concepts that will change how business
professionals communicate. As voice and data technologies
converge, Plantronics is driving the emergence of a new wireless
work style that capitalizes on the growing power of digital voice
technology.
Earlier this year, Plantronics announced two new wireless
headset products that are designed to meet the ever-changing
communications needs of mobile professionals. The two new
products, the CS50, a wireless office headset system, and the
M3000, a Bluetooth mobile headset, will ship later this year in
the U.S.
The CS50 combines hands-free communication with wireless
mobility, so users can move freely around the office while
carrying on a conversation, or pick up an important call while
they're away from their desk. The M3000 is a
Bluetooth-compatible wireless mobile headset that offers the
best talk time on the market—up to 8 hours—and up to 200 hours
of standby time. The CS50 and M3000 set the stage for the
Advanced Technology Concepts being demonstrated in New York
today.
The two Advanced Technology Concepts feature digital voice
technology that will shape the next generation in wireless
communications. The demonstrations include a wireless headset
and base system for the office with integrated Digital Signal
Processing (DSP), softphone compatibility, USB connectivity and
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) functionality. The
technologies employed in this concept improve sound quality so
that speech recognition and voice command programs can achieve
much greater accuracy. This allows users to move away from
keyboards and dial pads, and instead use their voice to dictate
e-mails, initiate telephone calls and execute software commands,
whether they're at their desk or down the hall.
The second digital voice technology being demonstrated is a
Bluetooth-enabled
wireless headsets for mobile users that
features exceptional voice clarity. A DSP chip embedded in the
headset boosts the user's voice while dramatically reducing
background noise, which is particularly important in noisy
environments such as airports, cars and city streets.
Although the digital technologies featured in these concepts
are only for demonstration, DSP technology will be incorporated
into future headsets to deliver superior sound quality in
smaller, more discreet designs.
"Over 40 years of headset innovation has brought us to this
critical juncture," said Ken Kannappan, President and CEO of
Plantronics. "Wireless products with digital sound will let
people use their voice to easily dial phone numbers, providing a
whole new level of freedom." He added, "Business and personal
communications are constantly changing, and Plantronics' plans
to lead the market by delivering cutting-edge solutions that
enable comfortable, flexible and productive voice
communications."
Plantronics is no stranger to the New York Stock Exchange.
Many of the traders on the floor of the Exchange use Plantronics
hands free headsets for communications as they execute their
trades. By ringing the bell today and showcasing advanced
technologies, Plantronics marks an important milestone in its
journey of developing headsets that enhance both business and
personal communications.
