UC / VoIP
UC (Unified Communications) and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) have different meanings in relationship to the size of your company. The following generalization is to help with the concepts and get you pointed in the right direction.
Small to Medium Sized Companies:
UC is defined as using one headset to connect to multiple devices such as your desk phone, PC and mobile phone.
VoIP is defined as using your computer as a communication method to replace your traditional desk phone. Using a USB headset or similar device plugged into your computer, you're able to talk using the internet. This saves you money in long distance charges and with software like Skype, you can also use video.
Large Companies:
UC is defined as being easily accessible via phone, pc, mobile, instant message and email. Using software like Microsoft Lync or Office Communicator, you have a 'presence' which means co-workers and companies you have 'federated' or joined with, can look at their computer screen or mobile smart phone and immediately see if you're available to talk. This saves time by not leaving countless voice mails with different people. You can quickly see who's available and instant message or call them. UC also means that you're able to simplify your reach ability by providing one phone number as your contact number. When dialed, this number rings your desk phone, pc softphone and your mobile phone.
VoIP is defined as the infrastructure that joins numerous employees in different locations, via the internet, the feeling of being under one roof. Your inbound calls are routed to agents that are available in different physical locations seamlessly.
