The Evolution of Corded Headsets

Plantronics originally made headsets for NASA and grew into today's headset market supporting business, home, and mobile corded headsets.  As technology has advanced, so have their corded headsets.  More choices, premium audio quality, and durability has made Plantronics the industry leader we know today.

The first commercial grade corded headsets were used by AT&T telephone/switchboard operators and were only available as an In-the-Ear wearing style and beige in color.  As corded headsets started to advance, the same In-the-Ear headset design became available in an ivory color and started the family of StarSet headsets.  The next generation of corded headsets brought us two advances.  For the first time a headband for Over-the-Head wearing style was available in brown, known as the Supra.  Second was the advent of adapters to plug into multi-line telephones for office use.  As Plantronics watched the office market expand, so did the models and adapters, allowing compatibility to more phones.  You would purchase a complete headset and amplifier that was only compatible with your phone.  A few switch settings were added to the amplifier for adjusting your audio quality.

In the early 1990’s, Plantronics introduced the M10 universal amplifier.  This was the single biggest step ever made in corded headsets, because it allowed you to purchase an amplifier compatible with almost any phone on the market.  This was made possible with a compatibility switch on the side of the M10 that you could adjust to your specific phone and be able to adapt if your company ever changed phone systems.  It also allowed the user to purchase a headset separately.  You could choose from a variety of wearing styles, all black in color; including, In-the-Ear (H31), Over-the Ear (H41), Over-the-Head with one ear (Supra H51), and Over-the-Head with two ears (Supra H61).  Users had the ultimate in quality, durability, universal compatibility, and choice of wearing styles.  You also had the choice of standard voice-tube models or noise-canceling models for louder environments.  With the Supra headband family of headsets, you had a headset that formed the true backbone of what made Plantronics the company they are today.

The next jump in corded headset technology brought us the TriStar and Encore families of headsets, with improved sound quality and deemed the top-of-the-line corded headsets from Plantronics.  Available in Over-the-Ear (H81), and headband models (H91 & H101), you had better directed sound and tone control with the headband models.

In 2004, Plantronics introduced the SupraPlus to set a new standard in performance, reliability, and comfort.  Building from the Supra family of corded headsets, the SupraPlus updated the design with enhanced speaker audio quality and flexible boom stability all rolled into a contemporary design.  Users were quick to adopt the new SupraPlus as the corded headset of choice in the call center and office market place.

The latest Plantronics headset to be re-introduced was the EncorePro in 2008.  With new wideband audio for clear conversations, ultra noise-canceling microphone for background noise reduction, and low-sitting microphone for perfect microphone positioning, the EncorePro is easily the most comfortable, best sounding commercial grade corded headset on the market providing all-day wearing comfort.

The amplifiers have also been keeping up with the advancing headsets.  We’ve transitioned from the M10 to the M12, and now the latest is the M22, which provides superior sound quality and acoustic protection to every call.

Plantronics corded headsets originally set the standard for commercial grade use, and over the years they continue to raise the bar in quality, durability, and comfort.
