Wouldn’t it be nice if all computer and electronic devices were on an even playing field. That no computer would be looked down on (perhaps because he may have a little age on him) but be on the same level as its peers, actually communicate peer-to-peer. Peer-to-Peer devices…what are we talking about here with regards to today’s communication technology?
You could say that peer-to-peer networking is the approach wherein all computers share the same responsibility for processing data. This networking (also known as peer networking) differs from the current client-server networking, where certain devices have the responsibility for providing or “serving” data while other devices consume or act as “clients” of those devices.
Computers in a peer-to-peer network use the same protocols and software. Peer networks are oftentimes situated physically near to each other, most typically in homes, small businesses or schools. Some peer networks, however, use the Internet and can be located anywhere in the world. Hybrid peer-to-peer (and client-server) devices are home networks that utilize broadband routers that provide centralized Internet connection sharing. File, printer, and other resource sharing is managed directly between the local computers within the network.
What are some of the benefits of peer-to-peer communication devices? First, you can configure computers in peer-to- peer workgroups to allow sharing of files, printers, and other resources throughout all the devices in the workgroup. Also, peer networks allow data to be shared easily in both directions, whether you want to download it to your computer or upload it from your computer to another. On the internet, peer-to-peer networks can handle a very high volume of file sharing traffic by distributing the load across many computers. Since they do not rely exclusively on central servers, peer networks scale better and are more flexible than client-server networks in case of failures or bottlenecks when sharing information.
Since so much peer-to-peer networking involves computers, you’re probably wondering what computer headsets there are that can be used to make your work easier. Plantronics, backed by over 50 years of headset innovation, offers an excellent selection of quality headsets to fit all your computing needs. Check them out at Headsets Direct or call their headset experts at 800-914-7996 to see how headsets can make your peer-to-peer communication so much easier.

The Plantronics CS540 battery (part # 86180-01) will initially provide 6-7 hours of continuous talk time. From normal usage, the battery charge time will diminish after years of use. It’s a good idea to replace your battery every year or two or when you notice a significant decrease in talk time. Replacing the battery will maximize your talk time with your CS540 and only takes a few minutes.
1) Slide the battery cover down and away from the speaker. This will remove the battery cover.
2) With your thumb and index finger, pull the battery out from the plastic tabs located on each side of the battery.
3) Now grasp the white battery connector and pull away from the CS540 headset.
4) Next reverse the previous steps to install your replacement battery.
When finished with installation, place your CS540 headset back into the docking cradle to charge. After a few hours your CS540 headset will be fully charged and ready for use.

You get in your car on a cold snowy morning, turn the key to start the engine and…the battery is dead! You’re at your daughter’s wedding reach for the camera to take those special pictures and…the battery is dead! You grab your headset to answer the phone and close that big million dollar deal when…the battery is dead! No doubt your response to all three scenarios is the same…why now!?! (Sorry, but we can’t print what you really want to say).
Yes, a healthy fully-charged and long-lasting battery is essential in so many situations. At Plantronics that need has not fallen on deaf ears. Ever since they entered the field of wireless communication, Plantronics has strived to provide a battery to meet the demands of the busy professional on the go. Their first attempts were fairly large and cumbersome external batteries (oh, how they would always catch on things and fall off at that critical juncture in a conversation) but they were not deterred. As technology advanced so did Plantronics’ efforts to come up with a compact unobtrusive battery that would provide the maximum talk time customers needed for their headsets. What they came up with was the 64399-01 lithium-ion battery, a battery for all reasons when it comes to Plantronics wireless headsets. Easy to disconnect and connect, the 64399-01 battery, along with the Plantronics’ low-battery early warning system, won’t leave you silent in the middle of that important call.

The CS540 wireless headset is compatible with most business telephones due to its technologically advanced compatibility side switch. The CS540 compatibility slide switch is easily changeable to allow operation with your particular phone.

After you have your CS540 wireless headset plugged in and charged, its time to make your first call. Remove the handset from your phone and press the call button on the side of your headset. Hopefully you hear a dial tone and you’re ready to dial your number. If not, you need to change your CS540 compatibility setting switch.
The CS540 compatibility slide switch is located on the bottom side of the CS540 base labeled A-G. The default setting is A and works on most phones, but if you don’t hear a dial tone, slide to the next letter until you hear a dial tone. Once you hear a dial tone, make your first call and continue adjusting your speaker and microphone settings.

The Plantronics CS540 offers two adjustments for your speaker volume. Adjusting your handset speaker volume will also affect your CS540 speaker volume, if plugged into the handset port on your telephone. The following will help you understand the different settings for your CS540 speaker volume control.
The first adjustment to become familiar with is on the underneath side of your Plantronics CS540 base. In the upper left you will see a dial with a small speaker emblem and numbers from 1 to 4; this is the major speaker adjustment for your CS540. 1 is the lowest volume setting and 4 is the loudest setting. Start with 1 and make a test call to someone you know. If you’re having trouble hearing, turn to the next higher number. You will feel the dial slide into the next number, and a faint click will be heard when properly lined up. When you can comfortably hear your caller, you’re finished with the major adjustment.
As you take calls with the Plantronics CS540, you will occasionally find a caller to be louder or quieter than normal. On the back of your CS540 headset, you will find the speaker minor, or fine tune, adjustment. Pushing up increases your volume and pushing down decreases your volume. You will hear a beep with each push as you adjust your volume until you hear a double beep indicating the end of the range.
Should you find your CS540 headset has an echo sound, or the sound is distorted or even squeals, it’s a sign that your speaker amplification is too high, and your volume source needs to be redirected. Redirecting the volume source from your phone to your headset means you’re changing which component is doing most of the work, your headset or your phone. If your headset is plugged into your telephone’s handset port, it means your phone’s volume up/down controls are actively being used. Try turning your phone’s volume completely down and adjust your CS540 base speaker setting to a comfortable level. If you try this and the sound quality is still poor or distorted, try the opposite; turn the headset base speaker setting to 1 and turn your telephone handset volume up to a comfortable level.
Spending a few minutes balancing your telephone and CS540 base speaker adjustments, you will find a setting that’s comfortable in volume and crystal clear in clarity.

The Plantronics CS540 provides a wide range of microphone volume to optimize the loudness of your voice to your caller. There are two important factors that control your headset microphone volume; microphone positioning of the headset, and microphone amplification from the base.
First, position the CS540 headset microphone approximately 1/4 of an inch away from the side of your mouth. This will provide the best sound quality of your voice to be picked up by the microphone. It’s also important to re-position the CS540 headset microphone in the same position each time you put the headset on to maintain consistent microphone volume.
Second, underneath the base of your CS540 you will see adjustment arrows on two round dials and one slide switch. The lower left dial is the microphone adjustment for the CS540 headset. You will see a small microphone picture and numbers from 1 to 6. As you turn the dial, you will feel when it makes contact at each number, and a click will be heard. Setting 1 is the lowest volume and setting 6 is the loudest. It is best to adjust the volume level before using the headset. To do this, get on a call with a co-worker and turn the dial up or down while talking continuously, until your caller indicates optimal volume.
By positioning the CS540 microphone correctly and adjusting the microphone volume setting at initial setup, your voice volume will be consistent and comfortable to your caller.
